Why It Matters

Shab-e-Barat falls two weeks before Ramadan. It is believed to be the night when Allah determines each person's destiny for the coming year and special mercy and forgiveness are available to those who seek it.

How It Is Observed

All-night prayer and supplication, visiting graves of family members, giving charity, fasting on the following day. Fireworks in some South Asian communities.
