Why It Matters

Purim commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people in ancient Persia from Haman's plot to destroy them, as told in the Book of Esther. It is one of the most joyous and festive holidays.

How It Is Observed

Reading the Book of Esther (Megillah), costumes and masquerade, mishloach manot (sending food gifts), matanot la'evyonim (giving to the poor), festive meals and celebration.

As the time when the Jews got relief from their enemies, and as the month when their sorrow was turned into joy and their mourning into a day of celebration.
