Why It Matters

Candlemas commemorates the presentation of Jesus at the Temple 40 days after his birth. Simeon recognized the infant as 'a light to enlighten the Gentiles.' All church candles for the year are blessed on this day.

How It Is Observed

Blessing and procession of candles, Nunc Dimittis canticle, solemn Mass. In France, crepes are made. Groundhog Day in North America derives from this tradition.
