All Saints Day
Honoring all the saints, known and unknown, who have attained heaven.
November 1
Why It Matters
All Saints Day honors all Christian saints in heaven, known and unknown. It grew from early Christian practices of honoring martyrs and was extended to all saints by Pope Gregory IV in the 9th century.
How It Is Observed
Mass and church services, visiting cemeteries, tending graves. In Mexico it merges with Dia de los Muertos; in the Philippines (Undas), families gather at graves with food and candles.
Sacred Text
“After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne.”
, Revelation 7:9 ↗
