Proverbs 10The Righteous and the Wicked

Summary

Proverbs 10 begins the main collection of the proverbs of Solomon, mostly two-line sayings that contrast opposites. A wise son gladdens his father; diligent hands make rich while slack hands bring poverty; the memory of the just is blessed. Many verses concern speech: the mouth of the righteous is a well of life, and the person who restrains his lips is wise. Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all sins. The theme throughout is that character shapes destiny.

Key verse

“Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins.”

Questions about Proverbs 10

What does love covereth all sins mean?

Proverbs 10:12 contrasts hatred, which reopens quarrels, with love, which overlooks and forgives offenses instead of exposing them. It describes how love treats the wrongs of others.

Why are Proverbs 10 to 29 so loosely arranged?

These chapters are collections of independent sayings, often grouped by catchwords or theme rather than in a running argument. Readers usually take them a verse or a cluster at a time.
