Vassa (Buddhist Lent) Begins
The beginning of the three-month Rains Retreat — intensive monastic practice.
📅 July 11🌙 Lunar calendar
✦ Why It Matters
Vassa is the annual three-month retreat observed by Theravada monks during the rainy season (July-October). The Buddha instituted it to prevent monks from harming growing crops during the monsoon. A time of intensified meditation, study, and Dhamma teaching.
✦ How It Is Observed
Monks remain in their monasteries for three months. Laypeople increase their observance, attend more Dhamma talks, and some take on additional practices.
✦ Sacred Text
“You yourself must make the effort. The Tathagatas only point the way. Those who enter the path and meditate will be free from the fetters of Mara.”
