Why It Matters

Enkutatash ('Gift of Jewels') marks the Ethiopian and Eritrean New Year (1st of Meskerem). According to tradition, when the Queen of Sheba returned from visiting King Solomon, she was welcomed with jewels. It follows the rainy season when the highlands burst into bloom.

How It Is Observed

Bouquets of yellow meskel flowers given to neighbors, children sing traditional songs, church services, wearing new clothes, community celebrations.
